Ducted Air Conditioners

House wide reverse cycle heating and cooling

What is a ducted air conditioner system?

Ducted air conditioning systems use an internal fan coil installed into the roof cavity of a home or property. Cooled or heated air is then delivered from this central location to multiple zones or rooms throughout the home via a series of interconnected ducts. Ducted systems offer a sleek and discreet air conditioning solution – the only visible components are the grilles through which the air is delivered and the controller.

What are the benefits of ducted air conditioning?

Many homeowners choose ducted air conditioning over a split system solution, and here are three reasons why:

Ducted air conditioning provides property-wide heating and cooling. A split system can only heat or cool the area or room in which they are installed. For families looking for air conditioner access in every room of their house, installing separate split system units can be an expensive and cumbersome solution. In contrast, ducted systems enable quick and easy property-wide air conditioning without the bulk of split system units, so every room in the home is comfortable.

Ducted air conditioning is ideal for contemporary homes. If you and your family live in a newer property featuring a light, bright, and airy open plan living area, a ducted system may make the most sense. To maximise the efficacy of a split system, the room or area in which it is installed should be closed off – in an open-plan living space, this isn’t possible. Ducted systems, on the other hand, allow you to evenly and efficiently cool larger areas.

Ducted air conditioning is discreet and unassuming. The main heating and cooling unit of a ducted system is tucked away out of sight in your roof cavity. Cooled or heated air is discreetly delivered to various zones via concealed ducts and ceiling vents. In short, ducted air conditioning delivers a big impact with a small footprint. So, if you are concerned about the aesthetics of a large and intrusive wall-mounted air conditioner unit, ducted may be best for you.

How big does my ducted system need to be?

Most air conditioners are rated in kilowatts (KW), which measures the system’s output. The higher the KW rating, the larger an area the unit can cool or heat.

As a general rule, you’ll need about 0.14KW per square metre of floor area. So, to calculate how big your ducted system needs to be, first measure the total floor area you want to be heated or cooled. For example, you may not want to cool your garage, laundry, or bathrooms. Then, use the following formula:

Total floor area to be cooled and heated x 0.14KW = size of ducted system

The below table details some general guidelines for deciding on the size of your system:

Area to be cooled (metres squared) Ducted system size (KW)
70 10
100 14
150 21
